Today we wrapped up our 9/11 Day of Service Project!
We were excited to welcome members of the Holbrook Fire Department, who brought a fire truck for our students to explore. Students asked questions, toured the truck, and learned more about the important work our firefighters do for our community.
Our students also completed 100 firefighter care kits and wrote 100 personal thank you cards for our local firefighters.
A special thank you to Mayor Kathleen Smith for joining us and helping our students. Care kits and cards were also delivered to the Joseph City Fire Department and Winslow Fire Department.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this project possible, especially AmeriCorps and 9/11 Day for the grant opportunity. We are proud of our students for giving back and showing appreciation to the first responders who serve our rural communities.

On September 8, several of our Student Council members presented at the Holbrook Unified School Board meeting. These young leaders represented HJHS with confidence, pride, and professionalism as they shared the many activities they are working on and their plans for the future.
Recently, our Student Council held a school-wide book drive to support the mini libraries located throughout our community.
Our Industrial Arts students are also building the mini libraries, bringing together student leadership, creativity, and service. These efforts will benefit the BIJOU Teen Center and our community.

Labor Day is a U.S. federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September that honors the contributions and achievements of American workers.

Mr. Lang, our 8th grade Social Studies teacher, has a great motto for his students this year: “Put Your Best Foot Forward!”
On the first week of school, students got creative by designing and coloring their own Nike shoes. What started as a fun first-day activity turned into something even more special when a staff member suggested having students vote for their favorite design—and Mr. Lang purchasing the winning pair!
Congratulations to Chloe Williams, whose shoe design was selected as the winner by her peers! Chloe even helped make a few final adjustments to the design and approved the finished product. She originally wanted a purple sole, but Nike only offers white soles for this design.
What a fun and memorable way to kick off the school year and reinforce what we believe at Holbrook Junior High:

Today in 7th grade Science, students used Fan and Pick to review questions and work with their group. Students also used 30-Second Expert to explain a topic to a partner in 30 seconds. These activities helped students review, talk about their learning, and explain their thinking.

After our first 10 days of school, about 175 students have perfect attendance! Thank you, parents, for making school a priority, and thank you, students, for showing up ready to learn every day! ❤️💙
These students received a special treat to celebrate their commitment!

During the first week of school, students worked together to build the tallest tower they could using spaghetti noodles, tape, and yarn. Their goal was to balance a marshmallow on top. This activity gave students a chance to get to know one another while practicing teamwork and problem-solving. They also worked on perseverance because they had to keep trying and change their plans when something did not work. These are all important skills that will help them throughout the school year as they work with others and face new challenges in their classes.

GAME DAY HAS ARRIVED!
The HJHS Student Council kicked off our FIRST GAME DAY of the school year, and our Futuristic Roadrunners brought the energy!
Students competed in fun events to earn points for their class cohorts, and the competition was LOUD, exciting, and full of school spirit!
Congratulations to the 8th Grade Class of 2031!
They took the win today and earned major points for their cohort. Their class chant was by far the loudest, proving that school spirit and teamwork matter!
And our teachers weren't about to sit on the sidelines! Teachers jumped into the action with a Wig Snatch Contest to help their grade levels earn even MORE points!
The final two teachers standing were Mr. McDaniel and Ms. Baloo, hanging onto their wigs and bringing home valuable points for their grade-level cohorts!
This is what being a Futuristic Roadrunner is all about—showing up, having fun, supporting one another, and working together as a team!
