Greetings Roadrunners- a quick reminder that HUSD will not be in session on Monday, September 4th for Labor Day! Also, parent-teacher conferences are next week! Have a great weekend and thanks for your partnership in Helping our Unique Students Develop!
Our fifth grade students have been learning about the effects of Westward Migration on Native Americans. They’ve been studying to answer the essential question: “How do cultural beliefs and values guide people?”
Today they completed a timeline of the Nez Perce people which began with large numbers of settlers moving into Nez Perce country and ended with the relocation of non-treaty Nez Perce people moved to the reservation at Lapwai, Idaho.
This timeline was created with the knowledge that students have acquired while reading multiple pieces of text about the Nez Perce people.
Diversity is our campus's strength and to hear the background knowledge that many of our students bring to these conversations has been amazing!
Please stop by Hulet School's Book Fair during Parent Teacher Conferences. Thank you in advance for supporting our school book fair and creating a love for reading with your child.

Students in Mrs. Moyte's second-grade class finished reading the text "How Do You Know It's Fall?" and were discussing the many things they've learned so far about how changes in weather impact people and nature. Students had to build their knowledge by accomplishing several tasks by sharing and learning new information from their peers. This is called a Socratic Seminar. It provides a structure for students to respectfully, responsibly, and kindly agree and disagree with each other.
One of the many reasons students work with the same text for several days (or whole weeks) is so that the knowledge "sticks" with them and they can remember it for the rest of their lives.
Some of the important questions they discussed were:
What did you learn about change?
What did you learn about plants and animals?
What did you learn about informational text?
What did you learn about the main ideas and details?
What new words did you learn?
What did you learn about reading fluently?
While Mrs. Moyte leads some of the Socratic Seminar, the goal is for the students to carry the conversation themselves and she just facilitates for equity in voice.

Times to be determined!
In the course of the school year, students at Hulet work towards mastering over 40 standards in reading, math, language, and writing! These skills prepare them for the future learning they will participate in.
Through strategies like "I Notice..." or "I Wonder..." as well as opportunities for students to be enriched and retaught in skills, it provides opportunities for students to grow towards mastery!
In math, they use a variety of strategies to solve problem based on place value and and they use strategies like the area model to solve complex problems.
It's through the countless hours of our teachers that help these students!
We love being a partner school with Run for the Wall!
Not only do they come visit us each May, they graciously donated these blankets to our students!
This Veterans Organization has always been so kind to us and we look forward to continuing a partnership with them!
At Hulet, we are RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, and KIND.
Each year we lead our students on a Roadrunner Tour throughout the school to teach kids what this looks like, feels like, and sounds like in the hallway, bathroom, playground, and cafeteria.
We even show kids what this looks like on the bus, with this video: https://youtu.be/VCRRCczSASo
It would be helpful if you reinforced these expectations with your students as well. It's what's going to help each of us become #NextLevelRoadrunners
On Monday, each of our teams and departments talked about how they're going to be 2.0 this year.
We also reflected on how much we each bring to each of the teams and created a collective resume!
